Injury Report, September 23

14 ranked players had an injury reported in the last day.

Team medical staffs and beat reporters moved 14 ranked players in the last day. This is the ranked-only list, an injury to someone the board does not carry is not a fantasy decision, so those are left out, ordered by the value actually at risk rather than by when it was reported.

Willson Contreras: Contreras (hand) is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Daulton Varsho: Varsho is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Mariners, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

Chase Burns: Burns (groin) worked on adding a sinker in his September outings before getting placed on the 15-day injured list to end his season, Charlie Goldsmith of FOX19 reports.

Samuel Basallo: The Orioles placed Basallo (concussion) on the 7-day injured list Wednesday.

Curtis Mead: Red Sox manager Chad Tracy indicated Tuesday that Mead (wrist) is a long shot to be available for the postseason, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Jackson Holliday: Holliday will undergo left wrist surgery next week, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Mitch Keller: Keller (shoulder) said Wednesday that he feels fully healthy and plans to resume throwing in late October, Aiden Stepansky of MLB.com reports.

Cristian Javier: Javier (2-6) allowed two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two over 5.1 innings to take the loss versus the Royals on Wednesday.

Brice Matthews: The Astros reinstated Matthews (knee) from the 60-day injured list Saturday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

The calls

Hold, day-to-day, not an IL move: Jeremy Peña, Willson Contreras, Daulton Varsho, Chase Burns

Bench, day-to-day and replaceable: Cristian Javier, Brice Matthews, Brett Bateman, Osleivis Basabe

Droppable, below the ~300th-ranked player, i.e. a free agent in most leagues: Samuel Basallo, Curtis Mead, Jackson Holliday, Mitch Keller, Fernando Cruz, Blade Tidwell

How to read this

The verdicts are the engine's, not a hot take, and the cutoffs come from the board rather than from taste: value 295 is the top 5% of ranked players, and value 134 is roughly the 300th-ranked player, the last man rostered in a 12-team league. Above 295 nobody drops anyone; below 134 the player is a free agent in most formats whether he is hurt or not.

Status is the IL designation itself, which is the only honest signal of length available: the feed carries no return dates and no estimated timelines at all, both fields are empty on every record, so anyone quoting a return date is guessing. A 60-day placement is the club saying months; a 10-day is a fortnight.

Value is the replacement-adjusted number the boards sort on, so it answers the only question that matters here: how much is actually at stake. A high-value name on a short absence is usually a hold; a mid-value name on a long one is where roster spots get decided.
