51 ranked players sent down or designated in the last 3 days.
51 players the engine ranks were sent down, designated, released or suspended in the last 3 days, 27 optioned, 11 designated for assignment, 11 released, 1 outrighted, 1 declared free agency. This is the half of the transaction wire nobody covers, and it is the more useful half: a demotion tells you who to drop, and it opens the playing time somebody else is about to inherit.
Sorted by what the player was worth before the move. The bar for appearing here is lower than on the rest of the site on purpose: a demotion is by definition a player whose value is falling, and applying the usual roster-relevance line would leave almost nobody. These are names that sit on real rosters.

A different signal from an option. A player sent to the minors keeps his roster spot and often comes back in weeks; a player designated has been removed from the 40-man and is usually gone for the season as far as your league is concerned.

1 of these were above the value of the last rostered player in a twelve-team league before the move, which makes them straightforward drops in most formats.
Anthony Volpe at 125 is the number that should stop you. Everyone else on this list either has a clear replacement behind him or was already priced as a bench piece; a shortstop the engine still valued at 125 does not get sent to Scranton because the Yankees have a better option, he gets sent because someone decided the at-bats were doing damage. That is the mechanism, and it matters for how you treat the roster spot. An option is a reversible decision made by a team that still controls him and still has him on the 40-man. The value figure is a forward read, not a report card, so it already knows what the last few months looked like. Hold him if you have a bench slot. In shallow leagues, that is a luxury you cannot pay for.
The strongest case against holding is the one I would make if I were arguing the other side: the Yankees optioned Volpe and Jasson Domínguez on the same day, and the second move is what gives the first its meaning. A team fixing one struggling young player keeps its lineup intact. A team clearing two at once, including an outfielder the engine had at 87, is rebuilding the shape of its lineup rather than giving anyone a two-week reset. If that is what happened, the recall comes in September, not in ten days, and 125 of forward value spread across a month of nothing is worth less than a streamer. The observable is simple. If Volpe is back inside two to three weeks and hitting anywhere but ninth, the number holds. If the Yankees import an infielder from outside the organization, drop him and do not look back.
Emmet Sheehan is the cleanest hold on the board. A starter valued at 156 before an option is not being demoted on merit, he is being moved because the Dodgers can move him, and the roster mechanics do the rest. Sheehan is the one player here I would stash through a quiet week even at the cost of a two-start arm. Brandon Sproat at 95 is the same logic with less certainty behind it: he is young, Milwaukee has options to burn, and the recall date is not in the team's control so much as in the rotation's health. Sheehan first. Sproat only if your bench is deep.
The releases and designations are a different animal, and I would not spend a roster spot on any of them. Jorge Soler at 111 is the highest-valued casualty here and the one people will be tempted by, but a designation removes the 40-man protection that an option preserves, and 111 was built on a role in Anaheim that no longer exists. He needs a new team and a new DH job before that number means anything again. Austin Gomber at 45 and Andrew McCutchen at 44 were both released by Gwinnett, which tells you where they already were. Eloy Jiménez at 45 is the same story in Buffalo. These are not stashes. They are names.
Who gains? The data does not say, and I am not going to guess at a replacement the table does not name. What it does say is that Cleveland freed first base by optioning Kyle Manzardo at 88, and Atlanta cleared two spots in three days, designating Jorge Mateo at 43 after optioning JR Ritchie at 70. Those are the openings to check your waiver wire against. The cost of guessing wrong on any of them is one bench week.
Being optioned and being designated are not the same thing. An option sends a player to the minors while he keeps his place on the 40-man roster, and plenty come back within weeks. A designation removes him from it, and in fantasy terms that is usually the end of the season for him.
Value is what the engine had the player at before the move, not after. It is there to tell you whether this was somebody you would have been starting, which is the question that decides whether it matters to you.
The bar for inclusion is deliberately lower than elsewhere on this site. A demotion is a falling player by definition, so the usual roster-relevance line would hide exactly the moves worth reading about.

Recency weighting: prior seasons contribute by recency (more recent = more weight) and sample size (more PA = more weight).
Shrinkage: observed rates regress toward position-specific population means by an amount inversely proportional to sample size. Catches small-sample outliers.
Quality-of-contact adjustments: xwOBA, barrel rate, and bat-tracking metrics replace luck-driven outcome stats with skill-driven ones.
PT modeling: projected PA is anchored to workload tier (full-time, regular, platoon, backup catcher) using historical role distributions.
Monte Carlo: N simulated seasons per player using projected mean + uncertainty, producing P10 / P50 / P90 distribution and bust%.
Confidence layers: four orthogonal multipliers: Roster (depth chart), Role (PT certainty), Sample (career PA), Market (consensus alignment). The Audit tab shows all four for every player.
VAR: Value Above Replacement at the player's primary position. Replacement levels are floored per position so SS scarcity doesn't artificially inflate stable middle infielders.
