Weather Watch, August 7

4 of 15 games have notable weather tonight.

4 of tonight's 15 games have weather worth a second look. The rest are playable and unremarkable, which is the normal state of a summer slate and the reason this only runs when there is something to say.

Games to check

PIT, PNC Park. 74% chance of rain, postponement risk

WSH, Nationals Park. 58% chance of rain, postponement risk

AZ, Chase Field. 108°F, warm air, the ball carries _Retractable roof, if it is closed, none of this reaches the field, and in heat like this it usually is._

TEX, Globe Life Field. 98°F, warm air, the ball carries _Retractable roof, if it is closed, none of this reaches the field, and in heat like this it usually is._

What this means

Pittsburgh is the only forecast on this board that should actually move a name out of your lineup. Seventy-four percent rain at PNC with the roof open is not a shower you wait out, it is a coin flip weighted toward a postponement, and the mechanism matters: an evening game in an open park with rain likely across the window gives the grounds crew nowhere to hide. If you are streaming a starter there, you are risking a zero-inning night on your one weekly transaction. The cost of being wrong is asymmetric. A pitcher you sit still exists tomorrow; a start you burn on a washout does not come back.

Washington at 58 percent is the harder call, and I would treat it differently from Pittsburgh rather than lumping the two together. That number is genuinely ambiguous: more likely than not you get rain at some point, but a mid-game delay is not the same as a cancellation, and hitters who have already logged two plate appearances before a stoppage keep them. So the read splits by position. I would still run bats at Nationals Park. I would not stream a marginal arm there, because the failure mode for a pitcher is a four-inning no-decision or nothing at all, while a hitter's downside is a shortened game rather than a canceled one.

Philadelphia at 46 percent looks scarier than it is, and this is where the panic is misplaced. Rain risk under fifty percent in an 87-degree environment usually means scattered convective stuff, and 87 degrees with humidity is the best carry night on the slate for a park that already rewards fly balls. If you own a Phillies bat, the weather argument for benching him is weaker than the weather argument for starting him. The falsifier here is simple and it happens by first pitch: if the tarp is on at the scheduled start, the read is dead and you pivot. Check the field, not the percentage.

The retractable-roof parks are where the forecast tells you the least, and I would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise. Chase Field at 108 and Globe Life at 98 both read like extreme offensive environments, but neither will be played in that air if the roof is shut, which at 108 degrees is close to certain and at 98 is likely. The number on the page is the outdoor temperature. The number that governs the baseball is a climate-controlled seventy-something, which is a neutral to slightly suppressed setting for carry. Do not upgrade an Arizona stack because you saw 108. If the roof is open, that changes, but nothing in this data tells you which way it goes.

That leaves Oracle Park, and 63 degrees is the one genuine downgrade nobody argues with. Cold, dense air at the coldest venue on the slate takes distance off everything, and a nine mph breeze on top of it does not help even though we cannot say which direction it cuts. The counterargument is fair: 63 is not freezing, and hitters have produced in far worse. But when I am choosing between two roughly equal bats, the tiebreak goes to the guy in the 88-degree Fenway air with 9 percent rain, which is the cleanest weather spot on the board. Boston, Kansas City at 87, and San Diego at zero percent are all boring, and boring is what you want.

The decision list is short. Sit Pittsburgh arms, hold Washington bats, ignore the Philadelphia percentage unless you see a tarp, and stop treating triple-digit desert heat as a park factor.

How to read this

Temperature is the most reliable weather effect in baseball: warm air is less dense and the ball carries further. It is a real edge at the extremes and a rounding error between 70 and 80 degrees.

Wind is reported as a speed and a compass direction and deliberately left uninterpreted. Whether a south wind helps hitters depends entirely on which way the park faces, and that is not something this site knows, so the bearing is given as a fact rather than dressed up as a conclusion.

Rain probability is the one to act on in daily formats. A postponed game is a zero in your lineup, and that costs more than any carry effect gains.

Retractable-roof parks are flagged with a caveat rather than asserted. The feed reports the roof TYPE, never whether it is open tonight, and a park that shuts the roof at 100 degrees turns the loudest number on the board into no effect at all. Fixed domes are excluded outright.
