League Leaders, September 30

Category leaders and 41 players chasing a round number.

Where the categories stand, and who is about to finish with a number worth remembering. 267 hitters have 300 plate appearances and 178 pitchers have 80 innings, which is the pool the rate categories are drawn from, a leaderboard that lets a forty-inning reliever win the ERA title is not a leaderboard.

On pace

Pace is current total over team games played, extended to 162. It assumes health and an unchanged role, the two things least likely to hold for the players it flatters most, so treat it as a checkpoint rather than a forecast.

How to read this

Rate categories require 300 plate appearances or 80 innings. Counting categories do not, because they gate themselves, nobody accumulates forty home runs in ninety at-bats, which is also why saves and holds carry no innings bar.

Pace uses TEAM games played, not the player's own. A player's game count only includes games he appeared in, so projecting off it would hand a part-time player a full season's pace and put him on this list.

None of this is our projection. Pace is arithmetic on what has already happened; the engine's forecast accounts for role, health and regression, and the two will often disagree, usually because pace ignores everything that makes a projection hard.
