Injury Report, September 20

16 ranked players had an injury reported in the last day.

Team medical staffs and beat reporters moved 16 ranked players in the last day. This is the ranked-only list, an injury to someone the board does not carry is not a fantasy decision, so those are left out, ordered by the value actually at risk rather than by when it was reported.

What the reports say

Kyle Tucker: Tucker (knee/shin) is not in Sunday's lineup against the Giants, per David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports.

Dylan Cease: Cease underwent an MRI on his shoulder Saturday and won't make his scheduled start Wednesday against the Orioles, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

Chase Burns: The Reds placed Burns on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a right groin strain.

Shohei (Two-Way) Ohtani: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Saturday's game that there's a "good chance" Ohtani (knee/biceps) will be activated during next week's series against the Padres, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Brandon Nimmo: Nimmo went 4-for-5 with a double and five RBI in Tuesday's 8-5 victory over the Athletics.

Willson Contreras: Contreras (hand) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Brayan Rocchio: Rocchio (leg) is out of the lineup for Sunday's matchup with the Athletics.

Xavier Edwards: Edwards (thumb) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres.

Tristan Peters: Peters (shoulder/rib) isn't in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers.

Bryce Eldridge: Eldridge (head) is in concussion protocol and won't play Sunday against the Dodgers, Justice delos Santos of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Kyle Karros: Karros went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Wednesday's 9-3 loss to the Padres.

Joc Pederson: Pederson (hand) is absent from Sunday's starting nine against Toronto.

Aaron Judge: Judge said Saturday that he didn't know the grade of his calf strain, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. "I gotta talk to the trainers and figure that out," Judge said.

Cal Quantrill: The Rangers placed Quantrill on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a right lat strain, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

The calls

Hold, day-to-day, not an IL move: Kyle Tucker, Dylan Cease, Chase Burns, Shohei (Two-Way) Ohtani, Brandon Nimmo, Willson Contreras, Brayan Rocchio, Xavier Edwards

Droppable, below the ~300th-ranked player, i.e. a free agent in most leagues: Aaron Judge, Cal Quantrill

How to read this

The verdicts are the engine's, not a hot take, and the cutoffs come from the board rather than from taste: value 295 is the top 5% of ranked players, and value 134 is roughly the 300th-ranked player, the last man rostered in a 12-team league. Above 295 nobody drops anyone; below 134 the player is a free agent in most formats whether he is hurt or not.

Status is the IL designation itself, which is the only honest signal of length available: the feed carries no return dates and no estimated timelines at all, both fields are empty on every record, so anyone quoting a return date is guessing. A 60-day placement is the club saying months; a 10-day is a fortnight.

Value is the replacement-adjusted number the boards sort on, so it answers the only question that matters here: how much is actually at stake. A high-value name on a short absence is usually a hold; a mid-value name on a long one is where roster spots get decided.
