Injury Report, September 18

11 ranked players had an injury reported in the last day.

Team medical staffs and beat reporters moved 11 ranked players in the last day. This is the ranked-only list, an injury to someone the board does not carry is not a fantasy decision, so those are left out, ordered by the value actually at risk rather than by when it was reported.

What the reports say

Willson Contreras: Interim manager Chad Tracy said after Thursday's win over the Rangers that Contreras has a bruised right hand and is considered day-to-day, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Joc Pederson: Pederson (hand) is not yet swinging a bat but the swelling in his left hand has gone done over the past few days, MLB.com reports.

Jared Young: Young (head) underwent a CT scan, which came back negative, following his departure from Thursday night's 3-0 loss to the Phillies, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Spencer Steer: Steer (wrist) has been taking dry swings and is preparing to hit off a velocity machine next week, MLB.com reports.

Aroldis Chapman: Interim manager Chad Tracy said after Thursday's 4-3 win over the Rangers that Chapman was unavailable due to a lat issue, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Jonathan Bowlan: Bowlan was removed from Thursday's contest against the Mets with right groin tightness, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Julian Garcia: The Reds placed Garcia on the 15-day injured list Friday with loose bodies in his right elbow.

Jack Leiter: Leiter (ankle/biceps) has begun playing catch again and is expected to throw a bullpen session this weekend, MLB.com reports.

Tony Gonsolin: Gonsolin (elbow) allowed three runs on four hits and no walks while striking out three over five innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.

Connor Seabold: Seabold (lat) struck out one across a perfect inning with Triple-A Omaha on Thursday.

Everson Pereira: Pereira (hand) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single along with two walks.

The calls

Hold, day-to-day, not an IL move: Willson Contreras, Joc Pederson

Bench, day-to-day and replaceable: Jared Young, Aroldis Chapman, Jonathan Bowlan

Droppable, 60-day IL and below roster-relevant value: Spencer Steer, Julian Garcia, Jack Leiter, Tony Gonsolin, Connor Seabold, Everson Pereira

How to read this

The verdicts are the engine's, not a hot take, and the cutoffs come from the board rather than from taste: value 295 is the top 5% of ranked players, and value 134 is roughly the 300th-ranked player, the last man rostered in a 12-team league. Above 295 nobody drops anyone; below 134 the player is a free agent in most formats whether he is hurt or not.

Status is the IL designation itself, which is the only honest signal of length available: the feed carries no return dates and no estimated timelines at all, both fields are empty on every record, so anyone quoting a return date is guessing. A 60-day placement is the club saying months; a 10-day is a fortnight.

Value is the replacement-adjusted number the boards sort on, so it answers the only question that matters here: how much is actually at stake. A high-value name on a short absence is usually a hold; a mid-value name on a long one is where roster spots get decided.
